Writers, painters, poets, musicians and all others who create something from nothing…do you enjoy the rough draft process, or do you like more the process of editing, once all the raw material has been pulled out of you?

LOL…I have my days, too – though over all I prefer editing to first drafts. I like to have something on the page to play with. It’s much more taxing for me to get the words out there the first time, and sometimes I feel like I literally have to “bleed” them out. 🙂

Mary..even though not one of the creative people you listed, I have written more than my share of creative pieces, I have to say that I dislike the rough draft. It never seems to flow the way I want it to flow. The only thing I dislike more is when someone makes me write and “outline”. I do like to edit, to play with words and nuances, to “clean up” what I have written.

You are creative in so many ways, Sandi! How does this apply to quilting, I wonder? I don’t know the process of going from idea to finished product. Can you see any correlation in the “rough draft” and “editing” phases to quilt-making?

I think I like the editing stages more Mary like when the pot is almost done on the potters wheel, but not quite ….. shaping,….. and continuing to shape …. and shape…. perfecting…. little by little.

Me, too, Tony! I can play with words for the longest time. I think of it as “tuning a piano”…the words have to have the right flow and sound to my inner ear. 🙂

I used to like the rough draft, more. When editing started, I felt like I was losing something. Now that plot ideas and character development comes easier, I’m about 50/50. I write a little too tight- when that habit goes away, I’ll probably love editing!

As a writer I think there is little more painful than cutting beloved words or scenes (except maybe having a technology glitch and having chunks of material vanish, never to be found again)! When editing, I usually cut and then paste the material in another file “just in case”…and that helps me to avoid feeling I’ve lost something. 🙂
